Pro tip: If your movie has cinematic dimensions, best export it on a 1920 × 1080 px canvas so you have a black bar at the top and bottom fixed. You can use Final Cut or iMovie for this. Then your subtitles will sit in that black bar and not disturb the film — as you can see in the preview below.

Preview maps your PlayRes and MarginV to scale. Letterboxing assumes 2.39:1 cinematic content in landscape frames (e.g. 1920×1080) or 16:9 video centred in portrait frames (e.g. 1080×1920).

Free SRT to ASS converter for dual-language subtitles

2srt2ass is a free online subtitle tool that merges two SRT files into a single ASS subtitle file. It is built for bilingual films, language learning, and fansub workflows where you want one language at the top of the screen and another at the bottom.

Why convert SRT to ASS?

Standard SRT files only support a single subtitle track with basic styling. ASS format lets you define separate styles for top and bottom subtitles, including font size, position, and opaque background boxes. Players such as VLC, mpv, and many media apps support ASS subtitles for dual-track display.

What this tool can do

  • Merge two SRT files into one ASS file with top and bottom tracks
  • Convert a single SRT to top-only or bottom-only ASS
  • Set video PlayRes, font size, font family, colours, and edge margins
  • Live preview before download
  • Shift subtitle timing manually or auto-sync two languages
  • Convert character encodings (UTF-8, Windows-1252, ISO-8859, and more)
  • Optional opaque boxes and custom output filename

How to use 2srt2ass

  1. Upload your bottom and top SRT subtitle files (or choose a single-track layout).
  2. Set encoding, font size, and timing options if needed.
  3. Click Convert to ass and download to save the merged file.
  4. Load the ASS file in your video player alongside your movie.

Private and browser-based

Unlike many subtitle converters, 2srt2ass runs entirely in your web browser. Your subtitle files are processed locally on your device and are never uploaded to a server. That makes it safe for unreleased material, personal projects, and copyrighted content you do not want to share.

Common use cases

Language students use dual subtitles to compare dialogue in two languages at once. Film clubs and meditation communities screen foreign-language teachings with a native translation on screen. Editors prepare screening copies with director commentary or translation in the lower third while keeping the original dialogue above.
